By Zoila Palma: U.S. President Donald Trump declared victory on Friday after Hamas issued its long-awaited response to his 20-point peace proposal aimed at ending the Gaza war, CNN reports.
Although Hamas stopped short of fully endorsing Trump’s plan — rejecting key provisions such as disarmament and a withdrawal from Gaza’s future governance — Trump focused on the group’s willingness to release all remaining Israeli hostages.
Within hours, Trump announced that peace was “very close,” calling it a “big day” for the Middle East.
Trump’s rapid embrace of Hamas’s response appeared to catch Israel off guard. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office released a cautious statement early Saturday saying Israel was “preparing to implement the first phase” of Trump’s plan and would “continue to work in full cooperation with the president.”
However, Trump’s public call for Israel to “immediately stop the bombing of Gaza” left Netanyahu in a politically difficult position, effectively shifting pressure onto him to de-escalate even before final terms were settled. Israeli officials later confirmed they were forming a negotiating team to finalize the details.
Behind the scenes, Trump’s advisers — including envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner — are heading to Egypt to advance talks on the hostage release and broader ceasefire terms.
Trump’s move marks the first time he has directly urged Israel to halt its offensive, reflecting growing tension between Washington and Jerusalem.
