By Aaron Humes: Nasry Asfura, the conservative National Party candidate backed by U.S. President Donald Trump, has been declared the winner of Honduras’ presidential election, with 40.3 percent of the vote, according to the National Electoral Council (CNE). Asfura narrowly edged out Salvador Nasralla of the center-right Liberal Party, who received 39.5 percent of the vote, the BBC reports.

The election was marred by technical problems and allegations of fraud, with the vote count delayed twice due to outages. The CNE president, Ana Paola Hall, blamed the private company responsible for tabulating the results for the delay, citing “inexcusable” maintenance without warning or checking with the CNE.

Asfura tweeted, “Honduras: I am ready to govern. I will not let you down,” while Nasralla stated, “I will not accept a result built on omissions,” but urged supporters to remain calm.

U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, urged all parties to respect the result, ensuring a peaceful transition of authority. However, the president of Honduras’ Congress, Luis Redondo, declared the result “completely illegal”. The election has sparked tensions, with protests held across the country, including thousands of supporters of the governing Libre party demonstrating in the capital, Tegucigalpa, over alleged fraud.

Trump’s endorsement of Asfura has been seen as influential, with some accusing him of interfering in the election. Trump had warned of “hell to pay” if Asfura’s lead was overturned and threatened to withdraw U.S. financial support if he did not win.
