By Zoila Palma: The Trump administration is reportedly in the early stages of planning a new military and intelligence mission that would send American troops into Mexico to target drug cartels, according to two current and two former U.S. officials familiar with the discussions.
Training for the potential mission—expected to include limited ground operations—has already begun, though officials emphasized that no final decision has been made, NBC reports.
The operation, if approved, would involve elite units from the Joint Special Operations Command working alongside CIA officers under a covert “Title 50” authority, granting intelligence-based operational control.
If launched, the mission would mark a sharp departure from previous U.S. administrations, which have restricted American involvement in Mexico to intelligence-sharing and support roles.
The Trump team reportedly intends to keep the operation secret and avoid public acknowledgment, similar to the administration’s low-profile drone strikes on suspected drug-smuggling boats in the Caribbean.
A senior administration official told reporters that the White House is “committed to utilizing an all-of-government approach to address the threats cartels pose to American citizens,” while both the CIA and Pentagon declined to comment on the plans.
Under the proposed framework, U.S. forces would rely primarily on drone strikes to target drug labs and cartel leaders, with some operators required on Mexican soil for effective coordination.
