International News: Trinidad and Tobago raises concerns over CARICOM Secretary General’s reappointment process

By Zoila Palma:  Trinidad and Tobago has formally questioned the re-election of Carla Barnett as Secretary General of CARICOM, citing concerns over a lack of inclusion in the decision-making process.

The issue stems from the 50th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government held from February 24 to 27, The Guardian reports.

Foreign and CARICOM Affairs Minister Sean Sobers said the government holds no personal objections to Barnett but is dissatisfied with how the process was conducted.

In a letter dated March 25 to CARICOM Chairman and Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Terrance Drew, the government outlined its concerns.

According to Sobers, Trinidad and Tobago was neither included in discussions nor given an opportunity to participate in deliberations on Barnett’s second term. The correspondence noted that the matter was not placed on the provisional agenda or discussed during plenary sessions at the meeting.

Sobers further stated that while discussions reportedly occurred during a February 26 retreat in Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago, along with Antigua and Barbuda and the Bahamas, was excluded.

At the time, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar had already departed the conference, leaving Sobers to lead the country’s delegation.

The government maintains that the process did not align with the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas, particularly provisions requiring Conference approval for such appointments.
