By Zoila Palma: Trinidad and Tobago placed its military on “State One Alert Level” on Friday, recalling all personnel to their bases as tensions escalate between the United States and Venezuela following deadly U.S. airstrikes in the Caribbean.
According to AFP, the order, confirmed by the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force and local police, also restricts all military leave until further notice. The island nation, situated just off Venezuela’s coast, has found itself on edge as regional security concerns mount.
The alert triggered brief panic in Port of Spain, where residents rushed to stock up on food and fuel, fearing a potential regional conflict.
Government officials quickly moved to calm public anxiety, assuring citizens that Trinidad and Tobago remains safe and that the administration is in “active contact with the Embassy of the United States of America” to monitor developments closely.
The heightened alert follows a U.S. military buildup in the region, including eight Navy ships deployed to the Caribbean, F-35 fighter jets stationed in Puerto Rico, and an aircraft carrier strike group reportedly en route.
