By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Trinidad and Tobago declared a state of emergency on Monday in response to a surge in deadly gang violence, AP reports.
The move followed a weekend of fatal shootings, including five victims believed to be killed in reprisal attacks.
National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds called the violence an “epidemic,” adding that the state of emergency would increase police and military presence but would not involve a curfew.
Authorities now have the power to conduct searches, detain suspects for 48 hours, and make arrests without warrants.
Acting Attorney General Stuart Young expressed concerns over the growing use of illegal firearms by gangs.
With 623 homicides recorded this year, 263 attributed to gang violence, the government is seeking to curb the escalating threat to public safety.
