By Zoila Palma: Trinidad and Tobago has declared a state of emergency after police uncovered a plot by a prison-based criminal network to murder top government officials and attack public institutions.
Police said the plot, coordinated through smuggled cell phones and encrypted messages, targeted senior police officers, judiciary members, and prosecutors. No politicians were believed to be directly targeted, AP reports.
Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro called the network “highly dangerous” and said the move came after months of intelligence gathering.
Gang leaders from a maximum-security prison have been relocated to an undisclosed facility.
This is the country’s second state of emergency in less than a year, following one last December over gang violence.
