By Zoila Palma: International travel to the U.S. is on the decline, with foreign arrivals dropping 4.4% in early 2025 compared to last year—and nearly 10% in March alone.
The shift is already impacting the U.S. economy, which relies heavily on tourism, contributing 2.5% to the GDP and supporting 15 million jobs, USA Today reports.
Travelers like Ryan Estrada and Kim Hyun Sook canceled their long-planned trip to the U.S. amid rising fears over immigration enforcement and detainments at the border. Kim, a Korean author, and Estrada, an American cartoonist, feared scrutiny over their art supplies and the political themes in Kim’s books—some of which are banned in U.S. states.
Their concerns echo those of many international travelers deterred by increased border scrutiny, shifting visa policies, and political tensions.
At Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, non-U.S. passenger traffic dropped nearly 5% this spring.
Tourism experts warn that these changes could have long-term impacts. “It’s shaking everything up,” said Dr. Hicham Jaddoud of USC Bovard College. The ripple effect of canceled trips is being felt across hotels, restaurants, and local economies.
Even allies are responding—Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently encouraged citizens to “choose Canada” over U.S. destinations, reflecting growing unease among international travelers.
