By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Starting in April, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government will implement a four-day workweek for government employees to support working parents and address Japan’s declining fertility rates, CNN reports.
The policy aims to provide employees with three days off each week, alongside another initiative allowing parents of young children to trade part of their salary for early leave.
Governor Yuriko Koike emphasized the need for flexible work arrangements to ensure no one has to choose between career and family, particularly in light of Japan’s record-low fertility rate, which dropped to 1.2 in June. To maintain a stable population, the fertility rate needs to be 2.1.
Japan’s fertility crisis has been linked to its demanding work culture, which puts pressure on women to choose between family and career.
The four-day workweek, which has gained traction in the West, is seen as a step toward improving work-life balance and addressing Japan’s population challenges.
