By Zoila Palma: Diplomatic tensions between the United States and Mexico have taken to the skies after the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) issued a sweeping order on October 28, canceling all flights between the U.S. and Mexico City’s Felipe Ángeles International Airport (NLU).
The decision affects 13 existing and planned routes operated by Aeroméxico, Volaris, and Viva Aerobus, three of Mexico’s major low-cost carriers, The Street reports.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy said the move is a response to what Washington describes as Mexico’s violation of the 2015 U.S.–Mexico Air Transport Agreement, accusing the country of engaging in “anti-competitive behavior” by restricting U.S. airline operations.
The new order also proposes to ban Mexican passenger airlines from transporting cargo between the two countries, a measure that could take effect within 108 business days of finalization.
Duffy defended the restrictions, saying the U.S. will “continue to hold Mexico accountable” until it honors its aviation commitments.
In response, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum publicly criticized the U.S. decision, announcing plans to meet with affected airlines to explore solutions. Mexico’s Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT) said it is consulting with stakeholders to ensure that “decisions benefit passengers and promote sustainable airline growth.”
Airlines have sought to reassure customers that flights remain unaffected for now.
Volaris and Viva Aerobus stated that ticket sales and operations will continue as normal while they assess the situation, though Aeroméxico’s website shows no available bookings for certain U.S. destinations beginning November 7.
Industry experts warn that the cancellations could drive higher fares, fewer direct routes, and economic losses for both nations.
Tourism, trade, and cargo operations are expected to suffer, with potential job losses at airports on both sides of the border. The dispute marks another flashpoint in U.S.–Mexico relations, highlighting how aviation policy has become a new arena for geopolitical tension.
