By Zoila Palma: Thousands of demonstrators rallied in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday to protest President Trump’s immigration policies, including aggressive deportation efforts.
The protest began near City Hall and quickly escalated as crowds blocked traffic at Spring and Temple streets, some even shutting down a section of the 101 Freeway, LA Times report.
Protesters, waving Mexican and Salvadoran flags, voiced their opposition to Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration, chanting against I.C.E. and holding signs like “Don’t bite the hand that feeds you” and “No more I.C.E. raids, no more fear.”
Many shared personal stories of fear and frustration, especially with the heightened focus on deporting undocumented immigrants.
As tensions rose, a few protesters took to the freeway, where burnouts by vehicles were seen. Police were on the scene by afternoon but refrained from intervening until evening when the freeway was cleared by 8 p.m.
The protests were sparked by Trump’s executive orders to limit legal immigration, build a stronger border wall, and ramp up deportation efforts, including a promise to deport millions of undocumented immigrants.
