By Zoila Palma:  Thousands of Haitians marched through Port-au-Prince on Wednesday to protest the surge in gang violence that has taken control of nearly all of the capital and surrounding areas.

The armed groups, united under the coalition Viv Ansanm, have displaced over 1 million people, fueled widespread hunger, and are accused of extortion, rape, and murder.

According to Reuters, protestors criticized the government’s inability to combat the gangs, with many blaming state corruption and possible collusion. “We are free. Those men cannot frighten me,” said one protestor, Joseph Mackendy.

The demonstration began peacefully but turned chaotic when gunfire broke out, sending crowds fleeing. Some protestors carried machetes and firearms, demanding to return to their homes and reclaim control.

The protest coincides with Haiti’s worsening economic situation, exacerbated by a recent U.S. decision to impose 10% tariffs on Haitian imports, further straining the country’s fragile economy. Economist Enomy Germain described the tariffs as “one more problem for a suffering country.”

Haiti’s transitional government, with support from a U.N.-backed security mission, has struggled to address the escalating violence, leaving many to question its effectiveness in tackling the crisis.
