By Zoila Palma: Rising tensions between the United States and Venezuela intensified this week after President Donald Trump deployed 10 F-35 stealth fighters to Puerto Rico as part of a military buildup targeting drug trafficking.
Trump renewed accusations that Venezuela is sending drugs and gang members into the U.S., Yahoo reports.
The deployment follows a controversial U.S. attack on a boat allegedly carrying drugs from Venezuela on September 2, which resulted in the deaths of 11 people.
Venezuelan authorities responded by flying F-16 jets over a U.S. Navy destroyer and accused U.S. forces of illegally seizing a Venezuelan fishing vessel.
Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil claimed the seizure was hostile and intended to justify escalating military action against Caracas, raising fears of further confrontation in the Southern Caribbean.
Experts have questioned the legality of the U.S. operations, citing potential violations of international law.
