By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Telegram founder Pavel Durov was moved from police custody to court in Paris for questioning, following his arrest at Bourget Airport earlier this week.
According to CNN, Durov, 39, faces potential indictment over allegations that Telegram’s lack of moderation has facilitated fraud, drug trafficking, and the spread of illegal content.
Durov was detained on a warrant related to these accusations and has been held for up to 96 hours, the maximum duration under French law before formal charges must be filed.
The investigation has sparked concerns about freedom of speech, particularly in Ukraine and Russia, where Telegram is widely used.
Telegram was launched in 2013 by Durov and his brother, Nikolai.
Telegram now has more than 950 million users making it one of the most widely used messaging platforms in the world.
Conversations on the app are encrypted, meaning that law enforcement agencies – and Telegram itself – have little oversight on what users post.
French President Emmanuel Macron has emphasized that the legal proceedings against Durov are not politically motivated.
Critics argue that the app’s privacy features have also made it a haven for illicit activities.
