By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Tech billionaire Elon Musk has pledged $1 million a day to voters who sign his political action committee’s petition supporting the Constitution until the U.S. November 5 election.
This initiative has sparked legal concerns, as some experts argue it may violate election laws by linking cash incentives to voter registration, the Associated Press reports.
Democratic Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro expressed worries over the legality of Musk’s plan, highlighting issues with “dark money” influencing elections.
Musk’s PAC aims to register voters and attempting to get voters in swing states to support Presidential candidate Donald Trump.
Legal experts warn that requiring petition signers to be registered voters could cross legal boundaries.
Brendan Fischer, a campaign finance lawyer, stated that conditioning payments on registration may violate laws against paying for voter registration.
Similarly, Michael Kang, an election law professor, noted the proximity to Election Day raises concerns about legality.
Musk’s PAC has previously offered smaller cash incentives for voter registration and referrals.
The Federal Election Commission recently allowed some coordination between campaigns and PACs, complicating the legal landscape.
