By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Tech billionaire Elon Musk has accepted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro’s unusual challenge to a fight.
The challenge comes after Musk, who owns the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), criticized Maduro for alleged election fraud and called him a “dictator.”
The dispute intensified following Venezuela’s contentious national election, where Maduro was declared the winner with 51% of the vote.
The delay in releasing official results and accusations of voter suppression have led Musk to denounce the election as fraudulent.
Maduro responded to Musk’s criticism on national television, daring him to a fight.
“Do you want to fight? Let’s do it. Elon Musk, I’m ready. I’m not afraid of you, Elon Musk. Let’s fight, wherever you want,” Maduro said.
On Wednesday afternoon, Musk tweeted “I accept” and responded to reports of his acceptance by saying, “He will chicken out.”
“If I win, he resigns as dictator of Venezuela,” Musk posted to X, before adding the offer, “If he wins, I give him a free ride to Mars.”
The fight challenge comes amidst mounting criticism of Maduro’s administration, following allegations of election interference and recent deadly protests in Venezuela.
Maduro also called out other Latin American leaders that challenge Maduro’s election victory including El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele.
