By Zoila Palma:  A protest by the National Educational Workers Coordination (CNTE), a powerful Mexican teachers’ union, briefly shut down Mexico City’s main international airport on Friday afternoon, delaying flights and stranding travelers, the New York Times report.

The disruption at Benito Juárez International Airport began around 2 p.m. and lasted roughly 20 minutes, as hundreds of union members blocked entrances and clashed with police, who escorted some travelers through the chaos. Flights were delayed or canceled, and traffic around the airport was heavily congested.

“We have not received any attention or respect to resolve our demands,” said union leader Eva Hinojosa Tera in a radio interview.

The CNTE is demanding doubled salaries and changes to pension and education laws. The protest follows a week of similar actions, including street blockades and clashes with journalists.

Despite the unrest, President Claudia Sheinbaum reiterated her support for peaceful protest but canceled a planned meeting with union leaders, citing budget constraints.

“We wish we could give more, because the teachers of Mexico deserve everything,” Sheinbaum said, “but there are times when there are budget limitations.”
