By Zoila Palma: Taiwan test-fired a U.S.-supplied HIMARS rocket system for the first time on Monday, demonstrating its growing defense capabilities amid rising tensions with China.
The High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), used effectively by Ukraine against Russia, was launched from Taiwan’s Jiupeng test range on the Pacific coast, CNN reports.
The system has a range of 300 km, capable of reaching targets in China’s Fujian province across the Taiwan Strait.
Taiwan has ordered 29 HIMARS units from the U.S., with 11 already delivered.
The test follows increased Chinese military activity near the island, including joint air and sea patrols.
Taiwan’s government, backed militarily by the U.S., rejects Beijing’s sovereignty claims, asserting its right to self-determination.
