By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Taiwan’s defense ministry reported that Chinese warplanes and warships conducted the first “combat patrol” of the year around the island, Reuters reported.
This came shortly after Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te reiterated his willingness to engage in talks with Beijing, despite previous rebuffs.
The ministry detected 22 Chinese military aircraft, including J-16 fighter jets, alongside Chinese warships.
The patrols took place in airspace around Taiwan’s north, west, southwest, and east, prompting Taiwan to deploy forces to monitor the activity.
China views Taiwan as its territory, and its military regularly conducts patrols near the island.
Taiwan, meanwhile, continues to advocate for dialogue, though Beijing considers Lai a “separatist.”
Earlier in the week, China’s Eastern Theatre Command released a New Year’s video showcasing its military assets, which Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung called an act of psychological warfare aimed at intimidating Taiwan.
