By Zoila Palma: Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te firmly rejected Beijing’s proposal of “one country, two systems” on Friday, declaring that Taiwan will continue to uphold its freedom, democracy, and sovereignty.
Speaking to soldiers at a military base in northern Taiwan’s Hukou, Lai said that peace cannot be achieved by yielding to aggression or abandoning sovereignty. “We reject ‘one country, two systems’ because we will forever uphold our free and democratic constitutional system,” he stated, reaffirming his government’s stance against unification under China’s terms.
According to Reuters, Beijing recently warned that it “absolutely will not” rule out the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control, striking a more aggressive tone following a series of state media articles that promised “benign rule” under its autonomy model, similar to those applied in Hong Kong and Macau.
Lai, whom China labels a “separatist,” said Taiwan must maintain “the status quo with dignity and resolve,” opposing annexation and forced unification. The remarks underscore rising tensions between Taipei and Beijing amid China’s growing military activities around the island.
Meanwhile, Taiwan continues to strengthen its defenses with U.S. support, having received 80 of 108 M1A2T tanks ordered from the United States, its main arms supplier.
During a meeting in Kuala Lumpur, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth raised concerns with Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun about Beijing’s military maneuvers near Taiwan and in the South China Sea.
