International News: Taiwan investigates Chinese ship suspected of damaging subsea cable

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: A Chinese-owned cargo ship, the Shunxing39, suspected of damaging a subsea telecom cable off Taiwan, has stopped transmitting its location, according to Taiwan’s coast guard.

The Cameroon-flagged vessel was briefly detained on Friday after allegedly dragging its anchor over the cable northeast of Taiwan, AFP reports.

Taiwan has asked South Korean authorities for help in the investigation after rough seas prevented them from boarding the ship.

The Shunxing39’s automatic identification system, which tracks its location, was turned off, and authorities say it has now left Taiwan’s jurisdiction.

While the captain admitted to dragging anchor, Taiwan’s coast guard has no clear evidence linking the ship to the cable damage.

The vessel is owned by Jie Yang Trading Limited, a Hong Kong-registered company, but the firm’s details remain unclear.

The damage affected the Trans-Pacific Express Cable System, reported by Taiwan’s Chunghwa Telecom.
