By Zoila Palma: Taiwan is considering a high-tech strategic partnership with the United States aimed at expanding investment and supply chain cooperation, the island’s top tariff negotiator said Thursday, Reuters report.
Vice Premier Cheng Li-chiun, leading talks with Washington, emphasized that the initiative would not involve relocating Taiwan’s supply chains but would focus on increasing U.S. production capacity through a “Taiwan model” of industrial investment planning and government-supported measures.
The discussions come as Taiwan, home to chipmaker TSMC, maintains a large trade surplus with the U.S. and seeks to reduce the 20% tariff on its exports.
Cheng highlighted that U.S. officials expect Taiwan to expand investments and collaborate on supply chains, while Taiwan aims to maintain its domestic production base and strengthen bilateral strategic cooperation without agreeing to proposals like a 50-50 chip production split.
TSMC, which is investing $165 billion in chip factories in Arizona, was not part of the latest negotiations.
Cheng said the island intends to remain rooted in Taiwan while deploying technology globally, aligning with Washington’s goal of boosting domestic production capacity to meet U.S. demand.
