By Zoila Palma: Taiwan’s government said it will evaluate measures to support its semiconductor industry after US President Donald Trump warned of upcoming tariffs on foreign-made chips, AFP reports.
Taiwan, a global leader in chip manufacturing, is vital to the supply of components used in products like iPhones and AI hardware.
Premier Cho Jung-tai announced that Taiwan will urgently assess potential support plans for the industry in response to Trump’s threats. “Taiwan’s position in the global supply chain cannot be ignored,” he stated.
Trump, who previously accused Taiwan of undermining the US chip industry, aims to bring chip production back to the US with tariffs on foreign-made semiconductors. He has targeted Taiwan, claiming it controls 98% of the chip business.
The US has been trying to reduce reliance on Taiwanese chips, including a $6.6 billion deal with TSMC to build facilities in Arizona.
TSMC, the world’s largest chipmaker, is also expanding production overseas, including new plants in Japan and the US.
