By Zoila Palma: Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) has strongly condemned Beijing’s decision to designate October 25 as the “Commemoration Day of Taiwan’s Restoration,” accusing China of attempting to rewrite history and falsely assert sovereignty over the island.
In a statement issued Friday, the MAC said the move was meant to “belittle our country and fabricate the claim that Taiwan belongs to the People’s Republic of China (PRC).”
Focus Taiwan reports that Taiwan MAC criticized Beijing for promoting what it called a “false historical narrative” under the “one China” framework.
The council reiterated that October 25, 1945, known in Taiwan as “Taiwan Retrocession Day,” marks the day when the Republic of China (ROC) accepted Japan’s surrender in Taiwan on behalf of the Allied powers.
It emphasized that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) did not establish the PRC until 1949 and played “no positive role” in the war against Japan.
China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency reported earlier on Friday that the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress approved the establishment of the new commemoration day.
The resolution calls for nationwide observances to mark what Beijing describes as “proof of China’s recovery of sovereignty over Taiwan.”
Taiwan, however, maintains a very different interpretation.
Earlier this year, the government reinstated “Taiwan Retrocession Day” as a public holiday in 2025 after a 24-year break.
The day commemorates the ROC’s acceptance of Japan’s surrender and the return of Taiwan and the Penghu Islands to Chinese governance under the ROC — four years before the founding of the PRC.
