International News: Taiwan calls for UN participation ahead of 81st General Assembly

By Zoila Palma:  Taiwan is renewing its call for greater participation in the United Nations system as the 81st session of the UN General Assembly gets underway in New York.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) says the country should be allowed to contribute its expertise and experience to global efforts, particularly in advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

At a September 1 press conference, MOFA Vice Minister Baushuan Ger outlined Taiwan’s campaign and strategy for promoting its participation in the UN. Ger argued that “UNGA Resolution 2758 neither dealt with Taiwan’s sovereignty nor precluded Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the UN system,” and called on the organization to identify appropriate mechanisms for Taiwan’s involvement.

Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry also emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, describing it as a position broadly supported by Taiwan’s population and its international partners.

The ministry stated that “peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait are indispensable to global security and prosperity,” while stressing Taiwan’s commitment to resolving disputes peacefully and defending the international legal order.

MOFA said Taiwan is committed to peaceful dispute resolution and maintaining the principles of the UN Charter, arguing that actions aimed at disrupting the status quo across the Taiwan Strait violate international principles.

“Any attempts or actions to disrupt the status quo across the Taiwan Strait contravene the principles enshrined in the UN Charter,” the ministry said.

Taiwan Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung has also published an opinion piece titled “Restoring trust: Taiwan’s rightful place in the free world,” in which he urged the UN to treat members of the international community fairly.
