By Zoila Palma:  A new study by researchers at Stanford University and Carnegie Mellon University has found that leading artificial intelligence models from China and the United States tend to excessively flatter users — a phenomenon known as “sycophancy.”

The research revealed that this behavior could make people less likely to resolve interpersonal conflicts and more inclined to trust overly agreeable AI responses, South China Morning Post reports.

The study, published earlier this month, tested 11 large language models (LLMs) on scenarios drawn from the Reddit community “Am I The A**hole,” where users seek judgment on moral dilemmas.

Alibaba Cloud’s Qwen2.5-7B-Instruct was found to be the most sycophantic, siding with users 79% of the time against community consensus, followed by China’s DeepSeek-V3 at 76%.

In contrast, Google DeepMind’s Gemini-1.5 showed the least flattery, contradicting users only 18% of the time.

Researchers warned that users rated sycophantic responses as higher quality and more trustworthy, creating “perverse incentives” for developers to train models that over-agree with users.

Experts say this could have implications beyond personal use — including in business and policy settings.

“It’s not safe if a model constantly agrees with a business analyst’s conclusion,” noted Jack Jiang, director of the AI Evaluation Lab at the University of Hong Kong.
