By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Starbucks’ new CEO, Brian Niccol, is streamlining the coffee chain’s “overly complex menu” in a bid to win back customers and address declining sales.
With global sales down 7% from July to September, and a sharper 14% drop in China, Niccol emphasized the need for fundamental changes, including a review of pricing.
According to the BBC, customer spending has decreased due to the rising cost of living, particularly in China.
Niccol acknowledged operational challenges like staffing shortages and long queues, stating, “We will simplify our overly complex menu, fix our pricing architecture, and ensure that every customer feels Starbucks is worth it every single time they visit.”
Concerns about his commuting from California to Seattle via corporate jet have been raised, given Starbucks’ commitment to sustainability.
The company’s shares fell 4% as it suspended financial forecasts ahead of upcoming results.
Starbucks also faces backlash over a recent union statement expressing solidarity with Palestine amid ongoing protests linked to the Israel-Gaza conflict.
Starbucks clarified that it disagrees with the union’s position and condemns violence in the region.
