International News: Solar Eclipse plunges parts of Europe into darkness in spectacular display

By Zoila Palma:  Millions of people gathered across parts of Europe today to witness a rare total solar eclipse, with stunning images capturing the moment the Moon moved directly between the Earth and the Sun.

Large crowds equipped with lawn chairs, umbrellas and hats gathered across northern and central Spain, while parts of Iceland and Greenland also had opportunities to observe the celestial event.

In Iceland, daylight briefly turned into darkness along the western coastline as the eclipse reached totality. Despite concerns about cloudy weather, skies cleared in some areas, allowing residents and tourists to witness the rare phenomenon. In Reykjavik, crowds reportedly cheered as the sky suddenly went dark near the iconic Hallgrímskirkja church. Totality was expected to last less than two and a half minutes, with the eclipse reaching its peak over the waters west of Iceland.

Spain was expected to attract as many as 6 million visitors to rural areas along the eclipse’s path and the Balearic Islands. Officials urged spectators to avoid areas affected by an ongoing heatwave because of increased wildfire risks. The event was particularly significant for Spain, where a total solar eclipse had not been visible across the Iberian Peninsula since 1912.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon completely blocks the Sun’s light, temporarily darkening the day and creating dramatic changes in the sky and surrounding environment. Scientists are also using the event as an opportunity for research, with NASA planning to operate a high-altitude aircraft from Iceland to track the Moon’s shadow while balloon missions study changes in the lower atmosphere.

Spain is scheduled to experience another total solar eclipse on August 2, 2027, followed by an annular eclipse in January 2028.
