By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Police in Mexico’s Sinaloa state reported 14 murders in a single day over the weekend, following increased violence linked to the arrest of drug trafficker Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada in the U.S.
Most killings occurred in the state capital, Culiacan, Reuters report.
The state attorney general’s office has begun 10 investigations into the homicides.
Recent months have seen escalated fighting between criminal groups, disrupting daily life and prompting business and school closures.
Since Zambada’s late July arrest, violence has surged, prompting President Claudia Sheinbaum to deploy military forces to the region.
Reports also surfaced of coolers containing human remains discovered with gang-related symbols.
Since September 9, at least 172 people have been killed and over 200 reported missing amid the ongoing violence.
