By Zoila Palma: In Sinaloa, Mexico, residents are calling for peace as drug-related violence continues to escalate, Reuters report.
Some are even supporting U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal for military action against cartels, a move he has suggested after labeling them as “foreign terrorist organizations.”
While Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has dismissed the idea of U.S. military involvement, stating it would violate Mexico’s sovereignty, the violence in Sinaloa has prompted growing frustration.
Hundreds have died in recent months due to an ongoing cartel war.
At a march in Culiacán, the state capital, protesters wearing white shirts waved signs and chanted “We want peace!” while burning effigies of local politicians. Apolinar Garcia, a protester, called for negotiations with the U.S. to help curb the violence.
Others, like Irama Garcia, expressed openness to international support, saying, “We need someone to support us and resolve the situation.”
Despite efforts by the Mexican government, including sending troops and making high-profile arrests, the violence continues, with little sign of resolution.
