By Aaron Humes: The New York Times reports that a shooting incident unfolded on the first night of Hanukkah at Bondi Beach, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, where a gathering of Jewish families turned into a scene of chaos and heartbreak. Police have confirmed that at least 11 people were killed in the attack, with multiple others injured, including two police officers.
Witnesses described a joyous atmosphere as families gathered to celebrate the festival of lights. However, that joy was shattered when at least two gunmen emerged from a small silver hatchback and opened fire on the crowd. One of the assailants is confirmed dead, while another is in custody. The authorities have classified the incident as a terrorist attack targeting the Jewish community.
“This is a targeted attack on Jewish Australians on the first day of Hanukkah, which should be a day of joy,” said Anthony Albanese, the Australian prime minister. “An attack on Jewish Australians is an attack on every Australian,” he added.
As darkness fell, chaos erupted along the half-mile stretch of beach. Videos captured panicked families fleeing the area, many scrambling over cars and walls to escape the gunfire. Bubbles floated in the air, and music filled the ambiance—until the moment of terror changed everything. Witnesses reported hearing screams and the sound of gunfire, as families sought refuge in nearby shops and restaurants.
One photographer at the event recounted the horrifying experience, stating, “It was just carnage.” He spoke of hiding behind a parking meter to avoid the gunfire, sustaining an injury during the chaotic scene.
In a chilling discovery, law enforcement found improvised explosive devices in a nearby vehicle, raising concerns about the intent behind the attack. This incident marks a continuation of rising antisemitic violence in Australia, with increased attacks reported over the past year, including incidents of arson against Jewish institutions.
Israel’s Foreign Minister condemned the attack and urged the Australian government to recognize the severe implications of escalating antisemitism. Yad Vashem, Israel’s official Holocaust memorial, called the shooting “both heartbreaking and alarming.”
Australia has long been known for its low gun-related death rate, making this violence particularly shocking to the public. As the investigation unfolds, stunned communities are left grappling with the tragedy and its implications for safety and tolerance in a multicultural society.
