International News: Ships remain wary of Strait of Hormuz crossing despite fragile ceasefire

52

By Zoila Palma:  Ships are continuing to approach the Strait of Hormuz with extreme caution despite a recently agreed two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran.

The agreement included assurances of “safe passage” through the critical waterway, which had been heavily disrupted during five weeks of conflict.

However, reports that vessels could be “targeted and destroyed” without permission have discouraged traffic, with only a handful of ships attempting the crossing in the past two days, BBC reports.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a vital artery for global trade, particularly for oil and key industrial chemicals used in products such as microchips, pharmaceuticals, and fertilisers.

Disruptions since the conflict began have rattled global markets, initially driving oil prices sharply higher before they fell briefly on news of the ceasefire. Analysts warn that uncertainty around safety and transit conditions continues to limit activity in the region.

Data shows that by 14:00 BST on 9 April, just 11 ships had passed through the strait since the ceasefire, far below the pre-conflict average of 138 daily crossings.

Experts say it is unclear whether these movements were enabled by the ceasefire or had been planned earlier.
