By Zoila Palma: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Monday that U.S. military involvement to combat drug cartels on Mexican soil is “unnecessary” after a 15‑minute phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Sheinbaum described the discussion as “very good,” emphasizing that both governments will continue joint efforts on security and drug trafficking while firmly rejecting any intervention that would infringe on Mexico’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, AP reports.
Trump — who has repeatedly offered to send U.S. forces into Mexico — reiterated the offer, but Sheinbaum said it was again declined, stressing that Mexico’s constitution prohibits foreign intervention.
The call followed a week of heightened tension after Trump publicly stated he was prepared to confront cartels “on land,” accusing them of effectively running Mexico and claiming success in curbing drug flow by sea.
Sheinbaum pointed to collaborative results, including a notable decrease in homicides and reductions in U.S. fentanyl seizures and overdose deaths, as evidence that existing cooperation is effective without unilateral U.S. military action.
Both leaders agreed to maintain collaboration, and Mexico’s Foreign Affairs Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio have also spoken about the need for “tangible results” in cartel dismantling efforts.
Analysts say that despite Trump’s aggressive rhetoric, direct U.S. intervention in Mexico remains unlikely because of strong bilateral cooperation and deep economic ties.
Mexico has emphasized its commitment to handling cartel threats domestically while working with U.S. law enforcement, and experts expect Trump to continue using interventionist language as a means of pressuring Mexico to intensify its efforts.
