By Zoila Palma: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum sought to calm rising public concern on Monday over recent U.S. military activity near Mexico, amid heightened regional tensions following a U.S. attack on Venezuela.
Late last week, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration issued a warning urging aircraft to “exercise caution” when flying over parts of the eastern Pacific near Mexico and Central America, citing unspecified “military activities,” which stoked fears of unannounced U.S. operations in Mexican airspace.
Sheinbaum said her government pressed Washington for written assurances that no U.S. military flights would enter Mexican territory and later received precise operational coordinates, with Mexican authorities stressing that the FAA advisory did not affect national airspace.
According to AP, the situation became more politically charged when photos of a U.S. military transport plane on the tarmac at Toluca International Airport — roughly 39 miles west of Mexico City — circulated on social media, prompting questions from opposition lawmakers.
Senator Clemente Castañeda of the Citizen Movement party demanded explanations, arguing that any foreign military presence or collaboration on Mexican soil typically requires Senate approval.
Sheinbaum said that the incident was a routine “logistical” stop tied to training, authorized by the Mexican Secretary of Defense and not involving U.S. troops entering Mexican territory for operations, and thus not needing legislative sign-off.
Her security cabinet reiterated that such training missions occurred under existing bilateral collaboration protocols.
