International News: Sheinbaum seeks closer U.S. coordination after Trump threatens land strikes on Mexican cartels

By Zoila Palma:  Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum on Friday said she has instructed her foreign minister to strengthen coordination with the United States, following threats by U.S. President Donald Trump to launch land attacks against drug cartels, which he claimed were effectively running Mexico.

Sheinbaum said Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente had been asked to establish direct contact with the U.S. secretary of state and, if necessary, to speak directly with Trump to reinforce bilateral cooperation, Reuters report.

Trump’s remarks to Fox News on Thursday marked the latest escalation in his calls for the use of U.S. military force against cartels inside Mexican territory, a move Mexico considers a red line.

The threats gained added weight after U.S. forces carried out strikes in Venezuela last weekend and captured President Nicolás Maduro.

“We’ve knocked out 97% of the drugs coming in by water, and we are going to start now hitting land with regard to the cartels,” Trump said, adding that it was “very, very sad” to see what he described as cartels running Mexico.

Sheinbaum has repeatedly warned that any unilateral U.S. military action would constitute a serious violation of Mexico’s sovereignty, while simultaneously emphasizing closer security cooperation with Washington.

She has highlighted preliminary data showing homicides have fallen 40% since she took office in October 2024 and has sought to ease U.S. pressure by extraditing alleged high-level cartel figures and launching a year-long military offensive against the Sinaloa Cartel.

Analysts say Mexico is likely to deepen coordination with Washington following the Venezuela operation in an effort to deter any unilateral U.S. action.
