International News: Sheinbaum rejects DEA claims linking Mexican Government to cartels

By Zoila Palma:  Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has dismissed remarks by U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Administrator Terry Cole, who claimed there is “a deadly connection” between the Mexican government and the country’s drug cartels.

During her press conference today, Sheinbaum described the comments as “unfortunate” and said they appeared to be political rather than supported by evidence.

Cole had stated on Tuesday that the Mexican government and cartel networks were “one and the same,” making them the DEA’s top priority, Reuters report.

In response, Sheinbaum urged the DEA to focus on combating drug trafficking, distribution, and money laundering within the United States, which she described as the world’s largest market for illicit drugs.

Mexico’s government also issued a formal statement rejecting the allegations, emphasizing that the claims ignored the country’s ongoing efforts against organized crime while reaffirming its willingness to cooperate with the United States in a manner that respects Mexican sovereignty.
