By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexico is ready to receive its citizens from the U.S. if President-elect Donald Trump follows through with his deportation plans, Yahoo reports.
President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration has stated it is prepared to coordinate with local and federal authorities to manage potential mass deportations of undocumented Mexicans.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry emphasized, however, that Mexico will not serve as a “safe third country” for migrants from other nations, reiterating its stance from Trump’s first term.
In 2019, Mexico rejected an agreement to make it a holding ground for asylum seekers from Central America.
Trump’s transition team has reached out to both Mexico and El Salvador about taking back their nationals.
Mexico’s Foreign Minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente is actively preparing consulates in the U.S. for this potential wave of deportations, working on legal strategies and document digitization for affected citizens.
In addition to preparing for deportations, Sheinbaum’s administration continues efforts to address border security and fentanyl trafficking to reduce potential conflicts with the incoming U.S. administration.
