International News: Sheinbaum accuses US of interference in Mexico’s domestic affairs

By Zoila Palma:  Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has issued her strongest criticism yet against what she describes as growing attempts by the United States to interfere in Mexico’s domestic affairs.

Speaking at a rally in Mexico City on Sunday, Sheinbaum claimed that efforts by US authorities and far-right groups to destabilize her administration intensified following the deaths of two CIA agents on April 19.

Sheinbaum pointed to the recent indictment of 10 Mexican officials by the US Department of Justice as the most serious example of intervention, Fortune reports.

Among those charged is Rubén Rocha Moya, the governor of Sinaloa state, who faces alleged drug trafficking-related offenses.

President Sheinbaum described the move as unprecedented in the history of relations between the two countries and questioned whether it reflected genuine cooperation or political motives linked to US electoral interests.

While reaffirming Mexico’s willingness to maintain security cooperation with the United States to combat drug trafficking, Sheinbaum stressed that such cooperation does not give foreign authorities the power to determine guilt or influence Mexican institutions. She argued that external pressure on domestic institutions crosses the line from cooperation into interference.
