By Zoila Palma: Fast-fashion giant Shein has announced plans to open its first permanent physical outlets in France, marking a major expansion beyond its online business model, BBC reports.
The Asian retailer will launch its first shop-in-shop location in Paris before expanding to five other cities — Dijon, Reims, Grenoble, Angers, and Limoges. The company said France’s “influential global fashion market” made it a “natural choice” for testing long-term physical retail.
The new outlets, created through a partnership with retail property group Société des Grands Magasins (SGM), will operate inside major department stores such as BHV Marais and Galeries Lafayette.
Shein said the collaboration aims to “revitalize city centers” and will generate around 200 jobs in France. Until now, Shein has only operated temporary pop-up stores in Europe, including previous short-term locations in Madrid and Paris.
The expansion comes as Shein faces growing scrutiny from European regulators.
In June, the French Senate passed legislation targeting fast-fashion companies like Shein and rival Temu, seeking to curb environmental harm and restrict advertising.
Founded in China and now headquartered in Singapore, Shein has been criticized for its rapid production of cheap clothing and alleged labor abuses.
