By Zoila Palma: U.S. scientists have successfully created early-stage human embryos using DNA extracted from skin cells, marking a major breakthrough in reproductive science, BBC reports.
The team at Oregon Health and Science University removed the nucleus from a skin cell and inserted it into a donor egg stripped of its genetic material. The eggs were then fertilized with sperm, and some developed into early-stage embryos, though none progressed beyond six days.
The technique could eventually help people with infertility due to age, disease, or cancer treatment, and may allow same-sex couples to have genetically related children.
Researchers caution that the method still requires significant refinement, as the process for discarding chromosomes is imperfect and success rates remain low. Experts estimate it could take a decade before the technology is ready for clinical use.
While hailed as an impressive scientific achievement, specialists stress the need for public discussion and robust ethical oversight.
“Breakthroughs such as this impress upon us the need for governance to ensure accountability and build public trust,” said Professor Roger Sturmey of the University of Hull.
Researchers continue to refine the approach, which forms part of a growing field called in vitro gametogenesis, aimed at creating sperm and eggs outside the human body.
