By Zoila Palma: Saint Lucia Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre has called for greater international support for countries facing the impacts of climate change, stressing that climate finance is a matter of justice, responsibility and survival. He made the remarks this week during the General Debate of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Pierre said Small Island Developing States, including Saint Lucia, are experiencing the consequences of a climate crisis they have contributed little to causing. He described climate change as a direct threat to national security, economic stability, food and water security, and human survival, pointing to unusual droughts during the rainy season, severe flooding during the dry season, and the impact of sargassum on beaches and coastlines.
The Prime Minister called for climate finance that matches the scale of the crisis, including expanded grants and concessional funding, faster and simpler access to financial resources, meaningful debt relief, and full support for loss and damage.
He stressed that vulnerable countries should not be forced to take on additional debt to repair damage caused by a crisis they did not create.
“A United Nations that delivers for all must deliver for those on the front lines of climate change through accessible finance, concrete support and measurable results, not merely through declarations,” Pierre stated.
