By Zoila Palma: Today, the United States brokered agreements to pause attacks at sea and on energy infrastructure between Ukraine and Russia.
According to Reuters, the deal includes Washington’s commitment to push for lifting some sanctions on Moscow.
These are the first formal agreements since President Donald Trump’s inauguration, as he advocates for ending the war and improving relations with Russia, a move that has raised concerns in Kyiv and Europe.
The U.S. agreement with Russia goes further, promising to help lift sanctions on Russian agriculture and fertilizer exports, a longstanding request from the Kremlin.
However, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that the deal would not take effect unless certain banking links between Russia and the global financial system are restored.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky denied this claim, insisting the agreements don’t depend on sanctions relief.
Both sides expressed skepticism, with Zelensky warning of further sanctions if Russia violates the truce. Russian officials also insisted that Washington must guarantee compliance, given their doubts about Kyiv’s commitment.
The agreements, reached after parallel talks in Saudi Arabia, include a 30-day pause on attacks targeting energy infrastructure, with both sides agreeing to resume Black Sea trade, which had been disrupted by Russia’s naval blockade.
While the agreements aim to ease tensions, questions remain about enforcement and the broader geopolitical implications, especially as the U.S. softens its stance on Russia. Ukrainian officials are cautious, wary that Trump might push a deal that compromises their security.
