By Zoila Palma: Today, Russia welcomed the arrival of a Russian-flagged oil tanker in Cuba, describing the shipment as part of its efforts to support the Caribbean nation amid an ongoing energy crisis.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow had discussed energy supplies with the United States ahead of the delivery and considers it a responsibility to assist Cuba, which is facing severe fuel shortages, CNBC reports.
The tanker, identified as the Anatoly Kolodkin, is carrying a reported 100,000 tons of crude oil and was expected to begin unloading shortly after reaching Cuban waters. The shipment marks the first significant fuel delivery to the island in months and is viewed as critical relief for a country grappling with limited access to petroleum products.
The development follows remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump indicating a softer stance on the de facto oil blockade against Cuba.
Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump said he had “no problem” with countries, including Russia, sending oil to the island, citing humanitarian needs despite maintaining criticism of Cuba’s leadership.
Cuba has been heavily affected by the disruption of oil supplies, particularly after shipments from Venezuela were halted earlier this year following U.S. actions against President Nicolás Maduro.
