By Zoila Palma: Russia has strongly condemned a recent U.S. military strike on a vessel allegedly carrying illegal drugs off the coast of Venezuela, warning of the risks of escalating tensions in the Caribbean region.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed the incident with his Venezuelan counterpart, Yvan Gil, on Sunday, expressing deep concern over Washington’s “escalating actions” in the area.
Lavrov stated that Russia “strongly condemns” the October 3 strike by U.S. forces on a ship in international waters near Venezuela, which resulted in four fatalities.
The U.S. accused the vessel of transporting large quantities of narcotics intended for distribution in America, Reuters report.
Moscow, however, questioned the legitimacy of the strike and warned against the United States using its anti-drug operations as a pretext for broader military involvement in the region.
Russia also criticized Washington’s interpretation of a recent UN Security Council resolution expanding the international mission combating armed gangs in Haiti.
