By Zoila Palma: A roof collapse at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, during a merengue concert early Tuesday has left at least 98 people dead and 160 injured.
Rescue teams are still searching through the rubble for survivors, AP reports.
Among the victims were Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Montecristi, and former MLB players Octavio Dotel and Tony Enrique Blanco Cabrera. Merengue singer Rubby Pérez was also performing when the roof fell, though his fate remains unclear.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the collapse, but no details have been provided on the building’s last inspection.
The club’s owner, Antonio Espaillat, expressed grief and confirmed cooperation with authorities.
President Luis Abinader arrived at the scene, offering support to those affected.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with a makeshift morgue set up nearby as hundreds wait for news about their loved ones.
