By Zoila Palma: Cristiano Ronaldo is set to make history after being named in Portugal’s provisional squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, placing him on course to become the first player to compete in six World Cup tournaments.
The 41-year-old forward remains one of football’s most decorated players and currently holds the men’s records for international appearances with 226 and international goals with 143.
Ronaldo is among 6 players to have featured in five World Cups, a group that includes Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who is also preparing for a sixth appearance after leading his country to World Cup glory in Qatar four years ago.
Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, has been playing for Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr since January 2023.
The Portuguese captain will be available for all of his country’s group-stage matches after avoiding a three-match suspension. Ronaldo had been sent off during Portugal’s penultimate World Cup qualifier against the Republic of Ireland in November but remains eligible for the tournament.
Portugal coach Roberto Martinez announced what he described as a squad of “27 players plus one,” paying tribute to former Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash last July. Martinez said Jota’s memory remains a source of inspiration for the national team.
