By Zoila Palma: Mexican and U.S. authorities tracked one of Mexico’s most wanted cartel leaders through the movements of a romantic partner, leading to the killing of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho.”
Today, President Claudia Sheinbaum said the country remains “under control” following Sunday’s operation targeting the longtime leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
Mexico’s Defense Secretary, Gen. Ricardo Trevilla Trejo, said intelligence obtained from monitoring one of Oseguera Cervantes’ romantic partners led authorities to a compound in Tapalpa, where the cartel is based.
A shootout erupted when he attempted to flee.
After being wounded in the crossfire, he was transported to Mexico City for medical treatment but died en route.
At least 8 cartel members and three Mexican officials were killed during the raid, which Trevilla Trejo described as “very violent.”
In the aftermath, cartel retaliation unleashed widespread bloodshed.
According to Mexico’s top security official, Omar García Harfuch, more than 30 suspected cartel members and 27 Mexican law enforcement personnel were killed amid the violence. Hundreds of roadblocks were reported across 20 states, most heavily concentrated in Jalisco, with attacks targeting gas stations and banks. Authorities detained 70 people in connection with the unrest, and Sheinbaum said the blockades had ceased by Monday.
The operation was seen as a major test of Mexico’s commitment to cracking down on organized crime under U.S. President Donald Trump.
While Mexican special forces led the raid, U.S. officials confirmed they provided intelligence support.
The CJNG is widely regarded as Mexico’s deadliest cartel and a primary trafficker of methamphetamine and fentanyl into the United States.
