International News: Road blockades spread across Petén, disrupting border crossings including Melchor de Mencos

By Zoila Palma:  Protests over rising fuel and basic food prices have intensified in Guatemala’s Petén department, with taxi drivers, truckers and other motorists blocking roads.

The demonstrations that began on Friday, August 28 continue today, Monday August 31, disrupting transportation and access at several key locations across the department.

This morning, motorists maintained road blockades in multiple areas of Petén. Access to the central area of Petén was blocked in front of Mundo Maya International Airport in Santa Elena, while the ferry service in Sayaxché was also suspended, halting transportation across the Pasión River.

Guatemalan Journalist Cesar Soler noted that the protests are being concentrated at several strategic locations, including the Ferry de la Pasión, El Rosario National Park, Las Pozas and La Ceiba in Sayaxché. In La Libertad, demonstrators are positioned at the borders with Mexico at the El Ceibo and El Naranjo crossings, as well as at the La Esperanza crossing.

Other affected areas include Melchor de Mencos on the Belize border, San Benito along the road leading to San Francisco, San Andrés at the crossing toward Sacpuy, Poptún at the Machaquilá Bridge, Santa Ana at La Potra crossing, and Santa Elena near Mundo Maya Airport and at Kilometer 8 near Turicentro.

The disruptions are raising concerns for travelers and commercial traffic moving between Guatemala and Belize, particularly through the Melchor de Mencos border area.

Motorists and travelers heading through Petén are being urged to exercise caution, monitor developments and be prepared for possible delays or changes in road access as the protests continue.
