By Zoila Palma: International human rights organizations have filed an emergency petition with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, seeking the release of Venezuelan migrants deported from the U.S. and imprisoned in El Salvador.
Over 200 Venezuelans, allegedly linked to the Tren de Aragua gang, were deported by the U.S. in March under a deal with the Salvadoran government, which is being paid to detain them in a maximum-security prison.
The detainees have been denied legal counsel and contact with their families, AP reports.
The lawsuit, backed by several rights groups, argues the men’s detention violates international law, with some individuals having pending asylum claims or protected status in the U.S.
El Salvador, under a years-long state of emergency, has faced criticism for human rights abuses under President Nayib Bukele’s anti-gang crackdown. A U.S. judge has ordered the government to disclose more details about the prison agreement.
The rights groups are asking for immediate measures, including legal access and the migrants’ return to the U.S.
