By Zoila Palma: Several relatives of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán have entered the United States as part of negotiations involving his son, Ovidio Guzmán López, Mexico’s Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch confirmed today.
Ovidio, extradited to the U.S. in September 2023, faces drug trafficking charges linked to the Sinaloa Cartel, CNN reports.
After initially pleading not guilty, he has now agreed to change his plea in a deal with U.S. authorities, according to court documents.
Harfuch said the arrival of Ovidio’s family members is tied to that plea deal. Mexican media reported that 17 relatives crossed into the U.S., though none are wanted by Mexican law enforcement.
Ovidio is one of four sons—known as “Los Chapitos”—accused of running the cartel’s operations. Another brother, Joaquín Guzmán López, was arrested in July 2024 after allegedly tricking cartel co-founder Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada onto a flight to the U.S.
Two other brothers, Iván Archivaldo and Jesús Alfredo Guzmán Salazar, remain at large with $10 million U.S. bounties on each.
Ovidio was previously arrested in 2019 but released to prevent further cartel violence. He was captured again in 2023 and later extradited.
